How do you remove the oem heatsink from a radeon video card?
The fan is beginning to die, it's been making a lot of noise lately (it was a huge relief when i realized it was that and not my hard drive). sometimes when i start my comp, the video card fan doesn't even start unless i give it a kick start! i've read that it is a common problem for radeons with the tiny black fan so i want to replace it with an aftermarket model, there are tons of them available but the heatsink is stuck on there pretty darn tight, i'm hesitant to apply too much pressure cuz i don't want to damage the board. any suggestions?
use a hair dryer to warm up the oem heatsink
did it myself a couple times (9-800XT and X-800XT PE following instructions that came with the Artic-cooling parts.
no need to burn your fingers, but when you start feeling that it's (really) hot, the cooler comes off easily.
coolers are usually also fixed to the videocard with two to four screws. they are very easy to unscrew and shouldn't be back in place with much strenght, neither.
