How do I install an AGP and PCI Video/Graphics Card in my PC properly?
I had a 64MB Nvidia in my AGP slot. I took it out and installed a new Nvidia 256MB card in the PCI slot.I put the AGP card back in and it wouldn't work. I went into the BIOS and chose the PCI card as the main card. I want to put the AGP card back in will it work now for a dual display? Was that the part that I was missing because I didn't go into the BIOS and tell it to use the PCI card as the main one so when I put the AGP card back in it thought it was the main card?
On many motherboards you CAN use a primary card (either AGP or PCI-Express) in addition to a secondary card in a PCI slot for dual displays, but it's usually easier to just get a single card with dual outputs.
Assuming your motherboard allows it, a few things which might help:
1) Uninstall any existing video drivers & software then shut down the computer.
2) Install the AGP card first, without the 2nd card present. Set the primary display in the BIOS to AGP.
3) Use a distinctly different model (or even brand) for the PCI card... otherwise driver installation might get messy- files needed for the primary card being installed for the secondary, etc. Old cards like the ATI Rage Pro and GeForce FX work well as secondary PCI cards.
After the secondary card is installed and hopefully drivers installed, your 2nd monitor will remain black until you go into display properties and manually specify to activate the 2nd card and extend the desktop.
It's much easier to use a single card with 2 VGA ports, but dual cards ARE supported under Windows 98 and later. I've used such systems for years.
